Happy Halloween: Monster in the Mirror- Trick

You Got a Trick!

In shadow work, the “monster in the mirror” symbolizes the parts of ourselves that we avoid or reject—traits, behaviors, or feelings that we label as “ugly,” “unacceptable,” or “scary.” These might be emotions like anger, jealousy, or vulnerability, or behaviors we don’t like to admit we have. The “monster” represents our shadow self, the parts of us that we hide from others and even ourselves because we fear judgment or shame.

Shadow work involves facing this “monster” in the mirror and learning to understand and accept it. By confronting the parts of ourselves we fear or dislike, we gain insight into why they exist and how they’ve shaped our lives. Often, these “monsters” are not as frightening as they seem; they may carry important messages or unmet needs that, when acknowledged, can lead to healing and personal growth.

So, whether it’s through the playful, eerie lens of Halloween or the transformative practice of shadow work, the “monster in the mirror” invites us to confront our shadows, face our fears, and integrate the parts of ourselves we’ve hidden away. By doing so, we realize that the monster isn’t as terrifying as we once believed—it’s simply a part of us longing for understanding and acceptance.

To get your trick, answer these questions:

Monster in the Mirror: What part of yourself do you reject or dislike the most? What could it teach you if you embraced it?

“Monster in the mirror” ties into Halloween’s playful and spooky atmosphere, where we face fears through costumes, eerie tales, and haunting imagery. It’s a time when people dress up as monsters, ghouls, and other creatures, exploring what it feels like to embody something scary or fearsome. The idea of looking in the mirror and seeing a “monster” reflects the thrill of Halloween—playing with our darker sides and confronting what scares us in a safe, imaginative way. It’s a reminder that, during this holiday, we can explore the shadowy, hidden parts of ourselves in a fun and creative manner, often realizing there’s more to these “monsters” than meets the eye.

Monster Mingle: What’s one “monster” trait you try to hide (e.g., your grumpiness or impatience)? What if you made friends with that part of yourself instead?
